Support with funeral and divorce costs

Major life changes like bereavement or divorce can bring unexpected financial burdens. If you’re struggling with these costs, there are support options available to help.

Help with funeral costs

Funeral Expenses Payment (England, Wales and Northern Ireland)

If you’re on a low income and receiving certain benefits, you may be eligible for a Funeral Expenses Payment from the government. This can help cover burial or cremation fees, some transport costs and provide up to £1,000 towards other funeral expenses.

Funeral Support Payment (Scotland)

This can help with burial or cremation fees, transport and other funeral costs.

Bereavement Support Payment

If your spouse or civil partner has passed away, you may receive up to £3,500 plus monthly payments for 18 months.

Charity assistance

Organisations like Quaker Social Action, The Bereavement Trust and The Royal British Legion offer financial help with funeral costs.

Help with divorce costs

If you’re on a low income, you may qualify for Legal Aid to help cover some legal costs. Free or subsidised mediation services are available to help couples reach agreements without going to court.

Court fee reductions

You may be eligible for a fee exemption or reduction on divorce applications and court proceedings if you’re on a low income or receiving benefits.

Mediation vouchers

The government offers mediation vouchers worth up to £500 to help cover the cost of mediation in family disputes, making it easier to resolve issues affordably.
