Housing Benefit
Housing Benefit helps with rent payments and is typically paid directly into your rent account (for council tenants) or your bank account (for private or housing association tenants). It’s means-tested, considering:
- Your rent amount
- Whether you live with another adult
- Any savings you have
- The number of rooms in your property
If you’re under pension age, apply for the housing element of Universal Credit if you’re on a low income, receiving benefits or are unemployed. If you’re over pension age, apply through Pension Credit via the Pension Service.
You can use our Benefits Calculator to check your eligibility for Housing Benefit and other support.
Discretionary Housing Payments (DHPs)
DHPs offer extra financial help with rent or housing costs. If you receive Housing Benefit or the housing element of Universal Credit, you may be eligible.
To apply, contact your local council and find out how much support you can receive and for how long.
Grants
You may be eligible for a non-repayable grant. Use the Turn2us grant search tool to explore available grants and see if you qualify for assistance.
