Broadband & TV

With prices rising every year, it's important to make sure you're getting value for money.

Compare and switch providers

If you’re in a contract, set a reminder to review it before it ends. This gives you time to explore other providers and ensures you’re not automatically switched to standard pricing when the contract renews. By reviewing it ahead of time, you can avoid paying more than necessary. If you’re no longer tied to a contract, you’re free to switch without cancellation fees.

Use a comparison website like GoCompareMoneySuperMarket or Uswitch and reach out to your existing provider to see if they can match or beat a competitor’s offer. Don’t forget to review what you’re actually using and consider downgrading your package if possible.

Share the cost and check for offers

If you live with housemates, splitting the cost of broadband and TV could save you money. Many providers offer family discounts for multiple accounts, so it’s worth checking if this could apply to you. Additionally, keep an eye out for special offers, including cashback or discounted subscriptions.

Avoid unnecessary extras

Review your current plan to ensure you’re not paying for services you don’t need. Unlimited data or premium channels might seem appealing, but if you don’t use them, consider downgrading your package. Also, check for hidden fees like paper billing charges or extra support services.

Avoid price hikes by locking in your contract

Many broadband contracts include mid-term price increases, so it’s important to understand the terms before signing. If your price increases, you may have the right to cancel your contract without a penalty. Consider locking in a fixed-rate contract to avoid future hikes.

Look for cashback deals

Some broadband providers offer cashback or gift cards as incentives for new customers. Look out for broadband deals with free vouchers or money-off rewards.

Social tariffs for broadband

If you’re on a low income or certain benefits, you may be eligible for discounted broadband options like BT Home EssentialsSky Broadband Basics or Virgin Media Essential Broadband. These tariffs are designed to make essential services more affordable and flexible, often with no exit fees or long-term contracts.

Use your own router

Some providers charge a router rental fee – using your own compatible router might save money. Better routers can improve Wi-Fi coverage, reducing the need for expensive signal boosters.

Free broadband if you’re job hunting

Jobseekers in the UK can access six months of free broadband through a partnership between TalkTalk and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), which is accessible through Jobcentre Plus.

TV Licensing

You need a TV Licence if you watch or record TV, stream live shows or watch BBC iPlayer. The costs are £174.50 per year for a colour licence and £58.50 per year for a black and white licence. You can spread the cost with a Simple Payment Plan, which works out at around £3 per week.

Family sharing

Share accounts like Netflix or Spotify with family or friends to save money.

Look out for offers

Sometimes providers offer extra perks for a limited time, i.e. cashback, vouchers or free Netflix subscriptions. Others offer bonuses all year round.

Avoid phantom subscriptions

Be mindful of your TV subscriptions – are there any you no longer need but you’re still paying for? Could you watch the same shows on another service you might already have?

Switch to an online TV subscription

Online services often provide more flexibility with cancellations and have great introductory offers.

Cut out monthly TV fees altogether

Consider Freeview or Freesat instead of paying a monthly fee. Always check cancellation fees before making changes.
